SALEE PRIETO, Torch Club member,  “The Intersection of Culture and Conflict in Mediation”

Sallee Prieto is the owner of Diverse Voices through which she trains people in cultural communication, intercultural communication, translation and interpretation. She also does mediations for the US Postal Service and is on the Kent County Court list of mediators. She is fluent in Spanish and trains and mediates in both Spanish and English. She has taught both languages to non-native speakers and written language skills — that is, “English” to college students. She really enjoys helping people understand the cultural mindsets that influence communication how people understand each other, and the motives and actions they take based on this understanding - or often - misunderstanding, which can sometimes lead to unnecessary conflict.

In the 18-20 years that she has been mediating, both as a volunteer with the Conflict Resolution Center of West Michigan and as a professional, she states that she has only handled one case that she would call mono-cultural. Every other case has involved some difference that caused each party to misunderstand the other because they were coming from a different mindset and/or way of using language. She will demonstrate how cultural differences, including the use of language, plays out in mediations using real life situations in which she has participated.
